Michelle-O's Thakoon

Smoke and mirrors? We defeat thee. We are Watchdog Nation!

I watched the debate last night on the edge of my seat. Nail biting. Wondering if McCain would croak right before my eyes or if Obama would disappoint me in some way. Neither happened. Although, they did both at some point say the other was being misleading or inaccurate. Good thing there’s Factcheck.org. This AP article clears things up, in case you were wondering.

Note to McCain: Telling Obama that he doesn’t know what he’s talking about and he doesn’t understand just shows that you’re either not listening or you’re a smug know-it-all who can’t see another point of view and judge people by their age and not their merit. Hmm…that reminds me of someone. Used to condescend to the country by telling us he’s working hard.

Note to Michelle-O: I don’t care if that Thakoon dress is $1250, it is one ugly smock.

This reminds me… it bugs me when people criticize the candidates (on either side) for voting one way then changing their minds and voting another way. They say the candidates waffle or are misinformed. But given more information, people are apt to change their minds. “Stay the course” is usually not evidence of wisdom or sound leadership.

Julie you’re such a reasonable a thoughtful person. There’s no place for you in politics ;)

Drat. With my high school leaderships roles, soft education, and ability to look nice in a bun I thought I’d make an excellent mayor-to-governor to…who knows.

I completely agree that “staying the course” isn’t the best policy in all cases, and that people should be able to change their minds without being criticized for it when better information comes along.

We watched the debates as well, and I wasn’t all that impressed, especially with Jim Lehr. I didn’t think his questions were that interesting, and they weren’t focused on the foreign policy / national security topics as much as I thought they should be. Obviously the economy and bailout is on most people’s minds, but I don’t think it’s a fair question to ask the candidates what they think of a non-existant bailout package. Nothing had been decided, yet they were supposed to offer an opinion on it. That, IMO, didn’t make a whole lot of sense.

I know it’s hard to do in a live debate, but I really want them to answer the questions that are asked instead of trying to contort their policies and previous speeches into some semblance of an answer. I know I came away several times thinking, “But you didn’t answer the question!” This is not to say, however, that I find it acceptable for the moderator to ask the SAME question over and over and over again using different language. Answer the question and move along.

I am definitely looking forward to the VP debates, as I think they will have a very high entertainment value.

I would like to add that when you support what is CLEARLY a ridiculous project, ie the Bridge to Nowhere, until everyone else decides it’s stupid, you are open to criticism. You can’t tell everyone you said “Thanks but no thanks” over and over again as your demonstration against porkbarrel spending when you were leading the charge FOR it the whole time. Changing your mind is one thing. Pretending you never made a bad decision is entirely another.

Yes. Good point. Change your mind and concede that you were wrong. Don’t change you mind and change history to bend to your new reality. Palin is queen of this. Her attempt to ban books is one of these situations, as far as I can tell. Here’s what I think happened… She wanted a book banned. She inquired about it and hit a brick wall in the form of the librarian. Sarah hates resistance! So, she tried to force the librarian out, probably to get someone in there who would stock the books she wanted. When people complained loudly enough, she backed down. Then she pretended she didn’t do any of it. “What? Banned books? I love that librarian like I love my guns, my kids, God, and hard work.”

It would also help if she’d answer the “Explain the Russia / foreign policy connection” question with, “You know what? It was kind of a dumb thing to say, but I was nervous. You’re right – it may not seem like I have a lot of foreign policy experience, but I am a fast learner. I don’t think anyone can know everything about everything, so I am willing to seek help from qualified people in areas where I need assistance.”

I still wouldn’t have voted for her, but I think it would have effectively killed the mocking she hates so much.

She hates the mocking? Tina Fey had better watch her back.

Didn’t you see the portion of the Katie Couric video where Sarah Palin was getting annoyed about that? She was one step away from smacking Katie.

The dress looked better on Michelle than it does on the model. Still, its pattern is almost identical to living room curtains from our apartment back in 1954.

And can you believe the price tag? Jeez, Michelle. Take it easy with the conspicuous consumption.
