The Big Bad GOP

“…I came up with a guide to the GOP primary field, expressed in terms of the Buffy villains they most resemble.” ~Neil Sinhababu at Cogitamus

Mitt Romney
Mittromney Mayorrichardwilkins_2The Mayor

They’re both clever and generically slick politicians, programmed to appeal to middle America. I can’t watch Mitt without thinking of the Demon Mayor of Sunnydale, and that’s what inspired this whole list.

The clip above is from a post at Cogitamus by Neil Sinhababu likening Buffy Big Bads to Republican candidates. Since this post will only amuse Buffy fans, I highly recommend that the non-initiated order all 7 seasons immediately, watch them as rapidly as possible (skip work if necessary), then read Sinhababu’s post. It’s totally worth the effort.

The Mayor was my favorite bad guy! So… I like Mitt Romney?

You might like him, but you also want his bad CGI self to get blown up in the library on graduation day.

Well ok, but only if he comes back later as an incarnation of the First Evil.

Well folks looks like there’s no Buffy fans here. But you don’t stand alone cause I am the biggest Buffy fan there is. My daughter and her friends would make fun of me because every time they walked in I was watching Buffy.

Oh and I love the comparisons, too.

Oh, yay, Cappy! Buffy fan! Hey, you could include that on your list of 30 things people should know about you.

    I’m on it!

Nice. Maybe you can turn someone on. Your friends will be like, “Cappy likes Buffy? It must be cool. I’d better go buy all 7 seasons immediately and have a non-stop Buffy marathon.”

“Cappy likes Buffy? It must be cool.”

This is a perfect example of backwards logic. Buffy isn’t cool because Cappy likes it, Cappy is cool because she has prostrated herself at the altar of Joss Whedon’s coolness. All coolness derives from Buffy, not the other way around. All hail the Slayer.

It’s really just a matter of perspective, of course. The uninitiated can’t follow your flow chart. They have to go from Cappy to Buffy. Although, I find it hasn’t worked that way for me. I haven’t convinced anyone to watch Buffy. I might not be as cool as I think I am. That can’t be. It must be that I tend to befriend the stubborn and opinionated. Yeah.

Yeah Julie hasn’t gotten me any closer to wanting to watch this show. Maybe if I had never saw any of it, but I did attempt watching it a few times when it was on and i was either really bored by it or just annoyed by it. I think the fact that I don’t get the appeal of SMG (she doesn’t even look like a hot cheerleader) and I actively dislike band camp flute chick is a big reason. The way she talks – something about it just rubs me the wrong way.

But yeah, GOP = evil, undead, vampires, zombies, etc

Gary, Buffy episodes must be watched in their proper context. I don’t particularly like SMG either, but you’re way off on Willow. She rules.

Anyway, it’s not SMG that makes that show great, although she can be an extremely good actress. It’s the storytelling, and you’ll never get it unless you’re willing to commit. And since you’ll never commit to Buffy, A) you’re not cool, and B) You’ll never realize how much you’re missing out on.

Julie, you’re cool. Even if it’s only other Buffy fans that say so. We know that Buffy is cool, so we’re cool, even if no one who isn’t on the inside ever says so. Screw those too cool to be cool people.

Maybe I’m coming off as a Buffy nerd? Wow. This is going to redefine the meaning of cool for me.

Haha. Nice. I thought you were mocking nerds here by getting all huffy about what’s cool.

I think Michael is a Friend Of Buffy.

Damn that’s almost Keyser-ish, yet a lot more clever.

I’m not sure what that means…
